With Real Salt Lake’s hopes of winning their first ever Supporters’ Shield seemingly dead, Alvaro Soborio let his team’s dreams live at least one day longer.
MLS Final Week: Alvaro Saborio’s Two Stoppage Time Goals Give Real Salt Lake Life In Supporters’ Shield Race
The Costa Rican striker scored twice in stoppage time -- the second on a 95th minute penalty -- to salvage a 2-2 tie for the Lakers and pull even on points with the Los Angeles Galaxy. RSL currently holds an eight-goal lead on differential, forcing the Galaxy to at least earn a point in their Sunday match with FC Dallas.
The tie also keeps the playoff field from being entirely set with one day left in the regular season.
The Supporters’ Shield winner will play the Seattle Sounders, who lost to the Houston Dynamo 2-1 earlier in the day. The Colorado Rapids and San Jose Earthquakes will move to the Eastern Conference where they will play the Columbus Crew and New York Red Bulls, respectively.
The tie allowed the Rapids to overtake the Earthquakes -- who lost to the Kansas City Wizards 4-1 earlier in the day -- for the No. 3 spot in the East. Both the Rapids and Quakes finished with 46 points, but the Rapids will get the higher seed based on goal-differential.
Here’s what the playoffs would look like if nothing changes on Sunday:
West
1. Real Salt Lake vs. 4. Sounders
2. Los Angeles Galaxy vs. 3. FC Dallas
East
1. New York Red Bulls vs. 4. San Jose Earthquakes
2. Columbus Crew vs. 3. Colorado Rapids
