The Crew entered Sunday’s season finale knowing that their match agains the Philadelphia Union was essentially meaningless aside from trying to snap their six-match winless streak.
MLS Final Week: Crew Win Game, But May Have Lost Hesmer
Two first-half goals and a 79th minute insurance goal seemed to be sufficient to accomplish that modest goal.
Unfortunately for the Crew, most of the postgame talk will not be about their ending the season with a 3-1 victory. Rather, it will be focused on the 86th minute injury goalkeeper William Hesmer suffered.
Hesmer’s injury was serious enough that the Crew opted to put midfielder Eddie Gaven in goal and play a man down for the rest of the match.
Gaven allowed a goal to Sebastian Le Toux (his 14th of the season), but made at least one save to preserve the victory.
Hesmer’s status for the Crew’s playoff series against the Colorado Rapids was not immediately available. Hesmer was one of only two goalkeepers to start all 30 games this season and played more regular season minutes than all but two other players.
