Arsenal haven't won a trophy since 2003-2004, when they took the Premier League title with their magical unbeaten season. While the Gunners remain a club that challenges for both league and domestic honors, Arsene Wenger is starting to get frustrated with the club's lack of hardware. A win over Newcastle today would send them in to the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup, which at least gives the team a possibility of lifting something shiny.
Carling Cup Fourth Round: Arsenal Travel To St James Park Trying To Keep Trophy Hopes Alive
Ted Harwood of The Short Fuse discusses whether Arsenal’s strategy in the cup game against Spurs reflects the club’s desire for a trophy:
If Arsenal win this game, they will be in the last eight for the Carling Cup, and given the slightly strengthened lineup that Wenger put out at Tottenham Hotspur, one might surmise that he is really going for the trophy. On the other hand, the fact that a number of Arsenal’s young players that have featured in this competition for a while now (Lansbury, Jack Wilshere, Denilson, Kieran Gibbs) have really come on strongly, perhaps it’s inevitable that Arsenal’s Carling Cup side has grown stronger, many of the youths of two or three years ago full first-team members now.
Ted also gives a projected lineup/formation for today’s match. For more coverage of the Gunners, visit SB Nation’s Arsenal blog, The Short Fuse.
