A fun London derby comes to an end with Chelsea emerging victorious, taking all three points to bring their total to 18. Although the Blues are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League, the match wasn’t a simple stroll for last year’s champions.
Chelsea-Arsenal: The Blues’ 2-0 Win Keeps Chelsea At The Top Of The League
Arsenal threatened goal again and again, but the shots were frequently high or wide, with Petr Cech’s role almost limited to a save off a strong Andrei Arshavin strike. The Blues didn’t play their best football this afternoon, with both Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba slightly off their usual form. Fortunately, Chelsea’s defense were able to contain the pressure Arsenal constantly applied.
Yet Drogba continued to cause grief for the Gunners, scoring off an Ashley Cole cross in the first half. Drogba now has 13 goals in 13 appearances against Arsenal, and six goals in the league thus far. Chelsea’s second goal came from Alex’s incredible free kick, with Malouda jumping out of the wall to make a perfect space for the strike to sail through.
Arsenal’s next test comes at the Emirates against Birmingham City, while Chelsea travel to play the other Second City club, Aston Villa.
