There’s been a lot written about the young, talented but inexperienced Belgian because, well, they’re young, talented, and inexperienced, three traits on display in today’s 0-2 win over Kazakhstan in Astana.
Euro 2012 Qualifying: Marvin Ogunjimi The Hero As Belgium Down Kazakhstan, 0-2
Minnow-esque Kazakhstan was able to take Belgium to halftime scoreless, Belgium’s lack of execution perhaps indicative of a team still coming to grips with the talent’s expectations.
After halftime, the depth of that talent was evident, with Romalu Lukaku, the teenage striking sensation for Anderlecht, giving way for Marvin Ogunjimi, Genk’s 22-year-old Nigerian-Belgian attacker. Within eight minutes of his debut, Ogunjimi had a goal, and after Kazakhstan had a man sent off, Ogunjimi added a second.
The three points were Belgium’s first in Euro 2012 qualifying, but if the team was going to have a relative hiccup, better today than against Austria in Brussels on Tuesday.
