Bundesliga Week 12 Sunday Review: Bayern Munich, Freiburg Both Win To Continue Their Ascent

Bayern Munich won the weekend’s biggest match in the Bundesliga emphatically at home against rivals Nurnberg, 3-0 while Freiburg left matters incredibly late away to Hoffenheim but left with a valuable 0-1 win. The wins for Freiburg and FC Bayern place the clubs in fourth and sixth, respectively, in the Bundesliga table.

The Bavarian derby played out in Munich to a packed and anxious crowd but was ultimately a match that FC Bayern dominated from start to finish. A brace from Mario Gomez (his sixth and seventh of the season) and a penalty from Phillipp Lahm were more than enough to see off Nurnberg at the Allianz Arena. Nurnberg seemed happy enough to sit back and invite Bayern onto them which Bayern obliged to and easily could have finished the visitors off by a greater margin than what the final score showed.

Bayern achieved the win at home largely because of their domination in midfield and their ability to press Nurnberg high up the pitch. Standout performances from Toni Kroos and Danijel Pranjic and also the return of winger Franck Ribery to competitive football will please manager Louis van Gaal who seems to have Munich back on track after a slow-ish start to the Bundesliga season.

Papiss Demba Cisse scored a late winner for Freiburg in injury time to snatch three points in what was an open and entertaining match at Hoffenheim. The strike from Cisse was his 10th of the season and moves Freiburg into fourth spot in the league.

The early part of the first half saw both sides create a few decent chances each while it was Hoffenheim’s Gylfi Sigurdsson who came closest in the 21st minute when his shot struck the crossbar. Seven minutes after the restart, Demba Ba did his best to shift the three points to the home side but was just a step behind Peniel Mlapa’s right sided cross that could have easily resulted in the game’s opening goal for Hoffenheim.

For all the chances and half-chances and as the match looked to be headed for a draw, Freiburg finally settled matters a minute into stoppage time when Cisse collected a Stefan Reisinger ball and beat Daniel Haas in the Hoffenheim goal after a fine turn to create the space he needed to shoot.
