Pumas have taken the lead through Dario Veron on a set piece, but America have been the better side throughout the first half.
Club America 0-1 Pumas de la U.N.A.M., Halftime Update: America Have Only Themselves To Blame
The first major opportunity of the match came only two minutes in when a ball was served up on a silver platter for Vicente Vuoso. Vicente Sanchez played a spectacular cross in that Vuoso only needed to poke, but he missed the ball completely and it rolled harmlessly away.
Pumas found the opening goal on the 14th minute thanks to some awful defending. America failed to deal with a corner kick and the ball bounced around, eventually falling to Pumas defender Dario Veron. While the opportunity shouldn’t have happened in the first place, you couldn’t say that Veron didn’t deserve his goal, finishing beautifully past Memo Ochoa.
Besides Vuoso’s bad miss, America have hit the woodwork twice. Though their lineup initially appeared to be a 4-4-2 setup, they have morphed into a 4-3-3 and have been very effective. Unless Pumas makes some changes, it seems unlikely that they will be able to hold America scoreless.
As it stands, Pumas will take the 8th seed in Liguilla while Tigres will be eliminated from the postseason.
