After an even second half, neither Pumas or America could add to their goal tally as the match ended 1-0 in favor of Pumas. Although America wanted to win against their cross-town rivals, a loss doesn’t hurt them at all as they stay in the No. 3 spot in Liguilla. With their win, Pumas move into the eighth and final spot and will face top seed Cruz Azul in the first round.

Pumas only came into this game with any life at all thanks to a collapse by Tigres yesterday, as they lost a two goal lead to lowly Atlas, then failed to regain their lead despite playing against ten men for an extended period of time. It set up a win and you’re in scenario for Pumas, and they capitalized. Tigres were in seventh place going into the final match day and were jumped by both Pumas and Pachuca.
America had a few chances to exploit Pumas’ aggressive team selection, but their finishing was poor. Star striker Vicente Vuoso had multiple opportunities to put his team on the board, but could not capitalize on any of them. Pumas didn’t create a great deal of opportunities for the volume of attacking players they selected, but a central defender converted one of them, and that was all they would need.
