Christian “Chaco” Gimenez stole the show last night against Pumas, scoring two absolutely ridiculous goals. The first one was on a free kick from about 40 yards away from goal and the second one came off of a volley from 20 yards away. The goals were the ninth and tenth on the season for Gimenez in the 2010 Apertura. This comes after an extremely disappointing tournament in the Bicentenario, where he scored only two goals.
Wednesday Liguilla Highlights: Chaco’s Sick Goals
Let’s give Dante Lopez and Martin Bravo of Pumas some props too; they did very well to set up the opening goal.
Thanks to the brilliance of Chaco Gimenez, Cruz Azul are heavy favorites to make the semifinals after the return leg this Saturday at Estadio Azul. Since the higher seeded team advances in the event of a tie in the first round of Liguilla, Pumas will need to win by two goals at Estadio Azul to advance.
Tonight’s matches are Jaguares de Chiapas vs. Santos Laguna and Pachuca vs. Monterrey. Both will be covered in full here and both will be complicated by the fact that the teams had players called up for international duty on Wednesday. Superstars Humberto Suazo and Cristian Benitez, among others, are unlikely to start.
