After a 2-1 win away to Pumas on Wednesday, Cruz Azul are in good shape going into tonight’s match, only needing to avoid losing by two goals to advance to the semifinals of Liguilla. As a result, they are playing a slightly more conservative side than they normally play. Pumas appear to be getting very aggressive with their setup. Here are the lineups.
Cruz Azul vs. Pumas de la U.N.A.M: Pre-Match Primer
Cruz Azul lineup (4-4-1-1): Corona / Pinto, Araujo, Cervantes, Castro / Vela, Torrado, Gutierrez, Villaluz / Gimenez / Villa
Pumas lineup (3-4-3): Bernal / Velarde, Veron, Palacios / Chiapas, Augusto, Castro, Cortes / Bravo, Lopez, Palencia
The Pumas formation is a little less obvious than the Cruz Azul formation, which is pretty obvious and probably set in stone. Pumas’ setup could end up looking like more of a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 formation with Chiapas forming a normal back four and Cortes playing a more advanced position than he would in a 3-4-3 setup. However, in a league known for fluid attacking setups and Pumas being a very desperate team at this point, their actual formation might become less and less relevant the longer they go without taking a lead.
Kickoff is just after 6 pm ET on Azteca America.
