After Horacio Cervantes received a red card in the 42nd minute, it was always going to be an uphill battle for Cruz Azul to avoid elimination. Still, they came out in the second half ready to defend, and they did so valiantly for most of the 45 minutes. Still, Pumas were assaulting the net and Jesus Corona was keeping his team in the match. Eventually, there was nothing he could do.
Cruz Azul vs. Pumas de la U.N.A.M: Cruz Azul Sent Out On A Penalty
Cruz Azul conceded a penalty for a handball in the box in the 83rd minute. It was a clear penalty and the home side could have no complaints. Substitute Juan Cacho stepped up and buried it, burying Cruz Azul’s chances of advancing.
It was an incredible turnaround after the first leg. With a win on the road, Cruz Azul appeared to have a trip to the semifinals in the bag. An early goal by Martin Bravo gave Pumas hope and Cervantes’ red card completely flipped the script. It was a choke of epic proportions, but it came from Mexico’s resident chokers. Should anyone really be that surprised?
Pumas will play the highest seeded remaining team in the Liguilla semifinals.
