The biggest complaint West Ham’s last to Liverpool last week wasn’t the final score, 3-0 at Anfield. Most bemoaned the effort, with a struggling Reds side afforded three goals before intermission. It was an effort that amplified calls for Avram Grant’s job, but after today’s win at Upton Park, some of those complaints will be silenced.
West Ham United Vs. Wigan Athletic: Hammers Convincing In Must-Win Match, Down Latics 3-1
After Valon Behrami send West Ham into halftime up 1-0, second half goals from Victor Obinna and Scott Parker built the Hammer lead to three. A penalty kick unconverted helped maintain the lead, and while Tom Cleverley would give Wigan a consolation goal, West Ham would post a convincing 3-1 win.
Without his name on the scoresheet, he is likely to be overlooked, so I want to take a moment to point Frederic Piquionne. While Obinna and Parker deserve their plaudits, some should go to the man who created West Ham’s first two goals. Piquionne knocked down a ball for Behrami’s opener then laid-off a pass to create Obinna’s tally, drawing the defense away from the Nigerian attacker.
Ultimately, the French attack was one of a number of strong Hammer performances, helping West Ham to their first win since September 25. They stay 20th, thanks to Wolverhampton’s win over Sunderland, but today they looked less like a bottom dweller than the team that beat Spurs just over two months ago.
