Toronto FC made official what has been widely reported, hiring Jurgen Klinsmann and his consulting firm SoccerSolutions to help remake an organization that has never made the MLS playoffs in its four-year history.
Toronto FC Officially Hires Jurgen Klinsmann As Consultant
“We’re honoured to work with a football icon like Jürgen and to have access to his wealth of experience and expertise to evaluate our current operations and support our team’s development,” said Tom Anselmi, executive vice-president and chief operating officer for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment.
Anselmi added that Klinsmann will work closely with Interim Director of Soccer Earl Cochrane and Assistant General Manager Jim Brennan.“Jürgen’s knowledge of the game and track record of international success, combined with Earl and Jim’s experience will allow us to objectively look at everything from players to people to processes and conduct a comprehensive search for new leadership.”
Among Klinsman’s first tasks will be finding a permanent general manager/director of soccer. Mo Johnston, who had filled that role for the entirety of TFC’s existence, was fired along with first-year coach Preki during the season.
Johnston’s tenure had become known for high-profile signings and higher-profile collapses. Despite having some of the most consistent support in the league, TFC never finished better than fifth in the Eastern Conference.
They seemed ready to make their first playoff appearances in each of the last two seasons, but late-season flameouts foiled those plans.
