Tecos have been poor all season, but that didn’t stop them from laying the smackdown in an impressive comeback win over reigning Mexican champions and current Liguilla contenders Toluca. Daniel Cisneros would score the eventual winner in an eventful second half that had all six of the game’s goals.
Estudiantes Tecos 4-2 Toluca: Have Chepo’s Boys Checked Out?
The scoring was opened in the 48th minute by Toluca’s Nestor Calderon. Defender Edgar Dueñas had gotten forward and put in a ball across the box, which was found by Calderon at the penalty spot and half volleyed into the back of the net. It would take only two minutes for Tecos to find an equalizer, with Mauro Cejas scoring an easy goal from 10 yards out thanks to a great ball from Rubens Sambueza and some terrible defending. Toluca would quickly re-claim their lead, though, scoring on a terrible Gustavo Cabral own goal after 53 minutes.
It would take until the 63rd minute for Mauro Cejas to find his second equalizer, giving him a brace on the night. Fredy Jose Barrero played a great low ball across the box from the left flank which was easily tapped in at the far post by an unmarked Cejas. Daniel Cisneros would find the winner with a great strike from 25 yards out in the 81st minute, and four minutes later, Cejas piled on the misery and gave Tecos a two goal lead and himself a hat trick.
Toluca manager Jose Manuel de la Torre is taking over the Mexican national team at the end of the season, and this seems to have had an effect on the team he currently presides over. Since the news came down that Chepo would be leaving the Red Devils, his team have looked mediocre at best. They currently sit third in Group Two and eighth overall, with all teams other than Tecos obviously possessing a game in hand over Toluca. Group mates Club America and San Luis as well as current Liguilla outsiders Chivas, Pumas, and Pachuca will be looking to take advantage of Toluca’s bad loss.
