Lecce fell 1-0 to Napoli today, the latest victim in a string of last-minute wins for the Partenopei. Edinson Cavani is once again the hero for Napoli, just as he was midweek when he scored a 93rd minute header against Steaua Bucharest to put his team into the next round in the Europa League. This time Cavani’s right foot stole the show. The Uruguayan forward, probably tired of watching the number of misplayed passes executed by Napoli, took matters to his own feet, taking the ball upfield before firing in a shot from 25 yards out. Lecce goalkeeper Antonio Rosati could only watch as the ball flew into the back corner of the net.
Italian Serie A Sunday: Napoli Find A Last Minute Winner Yet Again, Triumphing 1-0 Over Lecce
According to OptaPaolo, the last-minute winner is becoming routine for the forward, as five of Cavani’s 10 league goals for Napoli have been scored in the last five minutes of play. But Lecce almost grabbed all three points themselves, with a 92 minute shot being cleared off the line by Napoli defender Gianluca Grava. Instead, Napoli take the spoils and move into second place in Serie A.
Chievo Vernoa also benefited from so-called “Napoli-time,” finding a 93rd minute equalizer against Juventus. Juventus now have to settle for fourth in the table, whereas keeping the lead would have seen them tied with Napoli.
