Rafael van der Vaart's second goal of the night has given Tottenham Hostpur a 2-0, 68th minute lead at Villa Park, but Spurs' second goal was just as much the work of Gareth Bale was it was his Dutch teammate. Having been kept quiet through most of the match by Eric Lichaj, Bale created Spurs' second goal down the right flank, giving the 10-man side a commanding lead.
Aston Villa Vs. Tottenham Hotspur: Gareth Bale-Led Counter, Rafael Van Der Vaart Goal Give Spurs 2-0, 68th Minute Lead
The movement started when Bale, just outside his own area, picked up the ball and turned up field, heading toward the right flank. Having caught Villa in a counter, Bale ended up charging at Carlos Cuellar about 28 yards from goal, cutting inside, over an outstretched right left, to move the play toward the middle. Rather than lineup a shot on his left foot, Bale waited for the defense to collapse before laying off a pass to Aaron Lennon, coming from the left flank. Lennon touched the ball back for Rafael van der Vaart, who opened a right foot onto a well placed, 17-yard shot, scoring to the right of Brad Friedel.
