Wigan Vs. Arsenal: Ben Watson Scores From The Spot, Gives Latics 1-0 Lead

Ah, the ice water of an early penalty given. Nothing like it to bring you down from a high. That's what Arsenal fans are dealing with right now, with Wigan Athletic having taken a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute at the DW.

The call came after Charles N'Zogbia, sprung on a counter attack after a shot from Denilson was blocked at the edge of the Latics' area, was given space to run at Laurent Koscielny. The Wigan winger backed his counterpart down into the Arsenal box and then, after a pause to hint he was going to slow the play, tapped the ball to his left and made toward the middle. Koscielny stuck his right leg out, allow N'Zogbia to fall over it, drawing the call.

Ben Watson left no doubt on the ensuing kick. The Wigan midfielder stepped to the spot and powered a right-footed shot past Lukacz Fabianski, into the left side of the next, giving Roberto Martínez's men a 1-0 lead.
