It’s been a fairly uneventful 15 minutes for Liverpool, save for one decent chance off of a quick free kick that Raul Meireles should have buried. Liverpool are playing in a 4-4-2 setup with Dirk Kuyt on the left, Meireles on the right, and Steven Gerrard and Lucas in the center. Lucas is playing a holding role, with Gerrard having more freedom going forward, but also having defensive responsibilities.
GerrardTracker: 15 Minutes In, Gerrard Is, In Fact, Not On The Left
Liverpool are trying to play the ball forward slowly from the back, but Wolves have not allowed them to do so. As a result, they’re doing a lot of passing the ball back to the defenders and Pepe Reina. Steven Gerrard has grown frustrated with this and drifted deep a couple of times to try to pick up the ball. David N’Gog is doing quite a bit of drifting wide. Despite the lack of service, Fernando Torres has stayed disciplined so far.
It seems like Kuyt is deployed on the left not for attacking purposes, but to shadow Matt Jarvis, who is playing on the right wing for Wolves. Jarvis has done plenty of switching sides in the past, and it would not be surprising to see Kuyt go to the right if Jarvis starts attacking down the left.
So far, Gerrard gets an incomplete grade, but Wolves have done an excellent job of keeping him from getting the ball in dangerous positions.
