Arsenal has pulled even with Wigan Athletic, taking over 20 minutes to answer Ben Watson's spot kick. Andrei Arshavin, silent for most of the half, has executed a beautiful volley from 12 yards out - an overhead, right-footed shot - to make it 1-1 in the 39th minute.

The play started with a ball chipped from the right flank to Marouane Chamakh, the striker having drifted right to support. He touched the ball forward for Nicklas Bendtner, who streaked into the right side of the Wigan area before letting go of a 12 yard shot. Ali Al Habsi saved the shot, the rebound looping out toward the spot. There Arshavin jumped and leaned to his left, bringing his right foot above his shoulder and onto the descending ball, firing a shot into the right side of the Wigan net for Arsenal's first goal.
It was a well struck if unexpected ball, Arshavin ending his silence by bringing Arsenal even. Now in the 44th minutes, Wigan and their guests remain tied at one.
