After 40 minutes at the DW, we have a cracker - a surprising one. The last time we updated, Robert Huth had opened the scoring just short of the 20 minute mark. Since, Wigan and Stoke have combined for three goals, leaving the teams drawn at two as they approach halftime.
Wigan Athletic Vs. Stoke City: Four Goal Half Sends Teams To Intermission Tied At Two
Wigan started the three goal stretch when Tom Cleverly whipped a direct kick from the left of the box toward Asmir Begovic’s near post. Antolin Alcaraz got a toe on it to deflect it past the Stoke `keeper, though the score was recorded as an own goal credited to Danny Collins, who was standing between Alcaraz and goal.
Moments later Stoke equalized on the backs of a great effort from Kenywne Jones. The Potter striker came back to win a ball 40 yards from goal, put it past Maynor Figueroa on the left flank, and then outworked his opponent to keep the ball in play as it rolled along the paint. Jones then played it forward to Ricardo Fuller, who turned Wigan’s recovering defense by getting to the byline.
From there, the Jamaican put a ball back toward the spot. From the weak side, left wing Matthew Etherington came on for a right-footed finish past Ali Al Habsi, restoring Stoke’s lead.
That lead, reestablishing at the half hour mark, lasted nine minutes. Then Tom Cleverley’s speculative shot on got deflected off a Potter and into the left side of Begovic’s net, pulling Wigan even at two. Ironically, Cleverley is currently being given credit for the goal.
Now at half time, Wigan and Stoke have given us a surprisingly entertaining 2-2.
