Two Second-Half Goals Give Schalke 04 Victory Over Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich’s first-half profligacy came back to haunt them after the interval as Schalke 04 bounced back from their hammering at the hands of Kaiserslautern last week with goals from José Jurado and Benedikt Höwedes. Bayern started the second half on the front foot, but weren’t able to create the quality of chances that they had in the first half. On fifty-seven minutes Raúl got past Breno and Bayern failed to clear after his shot was blocked. The ball fell to Jurado, whose shot crashed off the post and into the back of the net to give Schalke the lead.

The champions almost responded immediately, but their attack was snuffed out by good defending from the hosts. Though Bayern continued to apply most of the pressure, they were caught out again nine minutes after going behind. Peer Kluge crossed to Höwedes, who was unmarked in the box. His header hit the same post as Jurado’s shot had, but it did not cross the line and trickled across the face of goal behind Hans-Jörg Butt for Höwedes to tap in at the opposite post. Bayern had a consolation goal from Mario Gómez wrongly ruled out for offside, but they couldn’t muster a response as Schalke picked up their first two-goal win against Germany’s record champions since 2003.
