Peter Odemwingie has his second goal of the day, converting an easy chance in the 89th minute, putting West Bromwich Albion up three on Newcastle Untied. Running onto a long ball from left back Marek Cech, Odemwingie’s brace highlighted the missing men in Newcastle’s central defense.
West Bromwich Albion Vs. Newcastle United: Peter Odemwingie’s Second Gives Maggies 3-0 Lead
Or to put it another way, it has been a long day for Sol Campbell. The Magpie defender was in the spotlight on the goal, trying to play Odemwingie offside as Cech lofted his ball over Newcastle’s high line. The Baggies striker, onside, raced for Cech’s ball, collected it at the edge of the area and, after moving to the left of an oncoming Tim Krul, easily finished, giving West Brom a 3-0 lead.
Campbell has had a tough day, looking slow and rigid in place of Fabricio Coloccini. The Argentine defender, normally Newcastle’s starter, is severing the second of a three match suspension.
After a decent performance last week against Chelsea, Campbell has had a part in all three goals today. The left-center half failed to provide help on Somen Tchoyi when the Cameroonian attack put back to the middle of the box on the first goal. On Odemwingie’s first, neither Campbell nor Steven Taylor were able to stop an attacker determined to single-handedly find a goal. Then on the final goal, Campbell was left to stand and watch as Taylor and Jose Enrique tried to catch up to the man he’d lost.
As a result, West Brom has a 3-0 lead, now in stoppage time at The Hawthorns.
