Surprisingly, it took an entire 22 minutes for Monterrey to open the scoring in their match against Estudiantes Tecos. The suffering of seeing a 0-0 scoreboard is finally over, though, as Sergio Santana has put the visitors ahead 1-0.
Estudiantes Tecos Vs. Monterrey: Sergio Santana Puts Visitors Ahead
The goal came from an incredible long ball from Neri Cardozo, who was playing deep on the left side of the field, a good 20 yards behind the halfway line. Tecos, despite having a laughably poor defense for all of last tournament and in their first game of this tournament, were playing a suicidally high line. When Cardozo played a ball over the top of the defense, Santana took off after it. The defense neither stepped up, nor followed him, and keeper Christian Martinez stayed on his line. This left Santana with acres of space in which to operate with no defender in sight. Santana rounded the keeper to his left and finished with his left foot from about 15 yards away to the center of the goal.
It was as easy of a goal as Monterrey could have possibly hoped for, and it was incredibly poor defending, even by the relatively low standards of Tecos. Incredibly enough, prior to the goal, Tecos were actually the team that had the best chances, forcing Jonathan Orozco into a couple of great saves.
