Hugo Rodallega's sixth goal of the season has put Wigan Athletic up 1-0 over Fulham after 56 minutes, the Colombian out-muscling Aaron Hughes to a long ball, eventually lobbing David Stockdale from close range to put the Latics ahead. Though the match's first 56 minutes had been played relatively evenly - both sides having at least one clear chance to open the scoring - it was a sudden long ball and a corresponding defensive breakdown that's put the home side up.
Wigan Vs. Fulham: Hugo Rodallega Gives Latics 57th Minute Lead
The breakdown came as Hughes misread the long ball out of Wigan’s end, allowing Rodallega to muscle his way behind the right center half and into position to play the ball as it bounced into the Fulham area. Hughes eventually pulled up, apparently expecting Stockdale to come off his line and play the ball, but the young `keeper only moved out far enough to give the Colombian an opening to lob him.
When the bouncing ball dropped just outside the six, to the right of goal, Rodallega calmly volleyed an arcing shot over Stockdale, easily into the far side of net, giving the `keeper no change. A nice piece of skill, though one that should have never been allowed to happen, gives Wigan a 1-0 lead.
