Stoke City are well on their way to three points at the Britannia after Matthew Etherington won and converted a 63rd minute penalty kick to give the Potters a 2-0 league. The Stoke left wing exploited defender Zat Knight to create the chance, squeezing his spot kick past Jussi Jaaskelainen to double the lead over Bolton.
Stoke City Vs. Bolton: Matthew Etherington Wins, Coverts Penalty, Gives Potters Two Goal Lead
Etherington had been his usual, dangerous self throughout the second half, and beating the biggest, slower Knight for pace, the Stoke winger was able to draw both a card and a penalty kick. He took the chance himself, firing a left-footed shot to the right side of Jussi Jaaskelainen’s net. The Bolton `keeper guessed correctly and actually got a hand on the ball, but because Etherington hit his shot with enough power, Jaaskelainen was only able to push the ball onto the post, being late in his dive.
The redirection saw Etherington's shot hit woodwork then ricochet in, leaving Stoke up 2-0 just past the hour mark. Now with only 15 minutes left and Bolton having brought on a third attacker (Rodrigo Moreno for Fabrice Muamba) , the Potters remain in control, one their way to moving even with Bolton with 30 points.
