English Premier League Saturday Round Up: Manchester City Claim Top Spot, Arsenal And Chelsea Both Win

Well that’s a Saturday in the Premier League all wrapped up then, who’s buying the first pint? As the final whistle has just blown at Upton Park, let’s take a quick look back at the day’s action and attempt to figure out what we’ve learned, if anything, from today’s results.

Chelsea 2-0 Blackburn - Hoping to finally end their worst league run in 15 years, Chelsea bounced back somewhat on Saturday with a 2-0 home win - goals coming from Branislav Ivanovic and Nicolas Anelka. With the win, we realize Chelsea are still a capable side at home, but can't yet be convinced that the Blues have anything left to say in this year's title race until a run of wins is witnessed.

Manchester City 4-3 Wolves - An insane ten minutes to start the second half put City up for good, but the three points gained didn't come without a bit of drama. Once up 4-1, City allowed Wolves to score twice which produced a nervous finish from the home side. With the three points gained, City show they have the firepower to see off any team in the league yet question marks surround their defending.

West Bromwich Albion 3-2 Blackpool - And what a game it was. West Brom got back on track with an exciting home win against a strong Blackpool side currently in the top half of the table. Peter Odemwingie scored a brace for the Baggies, his second coming late on and just six minutes after Blackpool, through Gary Taylor-Fletcher, leveled the score at two each. With the win we see that the up and down season WBA is having under Roberto Di Matteo still has a few ups left in it.

West Ham United 0-3 Arsenal - Saturday's late game was all Gunners as bottom of the table West Ham continue to prop up the table. The home side showed little going forward which allowed Arsenal to dominate possession and control the flow of the game through their superior midfield trio of Cesc Fabregas, Jack Wilshere and Alex Song. Robin van Persie scored a brace and Theo Walcott also scored to put the Gunners just a point behind Manchester United who play Sunday. With the loss, we continue to understand West Ham need a major shot in the arm if they are to avoid relegation. Lessons learned: nothing we didn't already know about the Hammers.

Wigan 1-1 Fulham - The stage was set for a Wigan home win until a late Andy Johnson deflected shot found the net to earn Fulham a point on the road. After a scoreless first half, Wigan opened the score through forward Hugo Rodallega but were unable to keep Fulham scoreless late on. Fulham looked to have equalized through Clint Dempsey, but the US international was adjudged to have handled the ball before striking. Dempsey's pass moments later found Andy Johnson who then found the goal via a slight deflection. Lessons learned: whenever these two sides play, expect a draw.

Stoke City 2-0 Bolton - Bolton continue their poor run of form as of late by suffering defeat away to Stoke City. The Potters are now eighth in the league after another home win thanks to goals from Danny Higginbotham and Matthew Etherington. After a great few months in the league, Bolton have now lost five of their last eight in league play. What did we learn? Bolton are slowly coming back down to earth after a great start and Stoke City are difficult to beat at home.
