Cardiff City was through to have the best chance of Tuesday's three underdogs, but after Jonathan Walters' extra time brace at Cardiff City Stadium, the Bluebirds are out, having lost their FA Cup third round replay to Stoke City, 2-0. That result, on top of wins by Manchester City and Wolverhampton, capped a perfect day for the Premier League, with all three clubs advancing by multi-goal margins.
FA Cup Replays, Review: Manchester City, Wolves, Stoke City Through After Perfect Day For Premier League
For Stoke, that margin will be deceiving, as the visitors rarely threatened their hosts through regulation. That changed two minutes into extra time when Walters, one of ten bench options brought into Tony Pulis’s starting XI, headed the Potters in front. Three minutes before the final whistle, Walters slammed home a right-footed shot to complete his brace, sending Stoke City to the Molineux next weekend to face Wolverhampton.
Wolves got a landslide victory over visiting Doncaster Rovers, opening the scoring through Steven Fletcher in the fifth minute. Goals would follow from Mjuanji Bia, Kevin Doyle, Matthew Jarvis and David Jones, all after the hour mark. While Doncaster provided more of the pressure through the first hour, Wolves created almost all of the changes, easing past their second tier opponents with a 5-0 win.
And in the day's main event, Sven Goran Eriksson can be proud of his team's performance upon his return to City of Manchester Stadium, though that was not enough to stop Manchester City from posting a 4-2 victory. Goals by Carlos Tévez, Patrick Vieira, Adam Johnson and Aleksandar Kolarov see the Citizens into the fourth round, where they'll visit League One's Notts County.
FA Cup third round replays conclude tomorrow at Elland Road when Arsenal visits Leeds United. The clubs drew 1-1 in their first match, last weekend, with Wednesday's winner getting Huddersfield Town at home.
