As expected, Athletic Bilbao looked like the better side out of halftime, challenging the Depor goal. What was not expected, though, is how Deportivo La Coruña’s goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia would flip the script.
Athletic Bilbao Vs. Deportivo La Coruña: Depor Goes 2-0 Up Off Amazing Long Ball
His long ball to Adrian was superb, and the Depor attacking midfield player picked it up and finished past Gorka Iraizoz. It was at least the third instance of very questionable defending by Bilbao. The most incredible thing about the goal, other than Aranzubia’s great long ball, was the fact that it looked like Bilbao were going to score only seconds earlier. Fernando Llorente barely missed the goal with a header off of a David Lopez cross just seconds before Depor added a second.
Athletic Bilbao have continued to press, but the goal is yet to come. It would be shocking to see them held scoreless, but Depor look like they’re defending well enough to preserve some valuable away points. Not to mention the fact that Bilbao’s finishing has been wasteful at best.
