Blackpool looked to have some theatrics in them, finding a very late goal against visiting Sunderland to pull them to within one. The Black Cats, however, were not in a dramatic mood, holding their 2-1 lead through the final whistle, giving them a happy ending to a tumultuous week.
Blackpool Vs. Sunderland: Late Charlie Adam Spot Kick Can’t Save Tangerines From 2-1 Loss
The Tangerines' goal came in the 86th minute after Sunderland defender Nedum Onouha was judged to have brought down Adam 14 yards from goal. The decision looked harsh, but no matter. Adam stepped to the spot and pulled Blackpool within one, Sunderland having built their lead on two Kieran Richardson goals.
That was all Blackpool would get, however. Sunderland was able to hold their lead through the match's final minutes and get three points in their first game post-Darren Bent. The team's leading scorer moved to Aston Villa mid-week, but if today's performance is any indication, Bent won't be missed, with replacement Asamoah Gyan playing an integral part in the team's first goal.
With the win, Sunderland is now within one of fourth place, pending Monday's result from Chelsea's trip to Bolton. Blackpool keeps a respectable playing, sitting 11th.
