It’s to the Borussia Mönchengladbach players’ great credit that they continued to pour forward after Gonzalo Castro scored Bayer Leverkusen’s third, but their efforts were in vain. Jupp Heynckes’s side remain unbeaten on their travels in the Bundesliga, and turned around from a 3-1 home defeat against Borussia Dortmund with a fairly convincing 3-1 victory in Mönchengladbach.
Victory Moves Bayer Leverkusen Up To Second, Borussia Mönchengladbach Lose At Home Again
It wasn’t all easy for Leverkusen in the closing stages -- the American midfielder Michael Bradley nearly set up Karim Matmour with his first touch, a header off of a set piece, but the Matmour’s header bounced out off the top of the crossbar. Mohammadou Idrissou had a shot that went with a few minutes to play, and Matmour nearly found Mike Hanke two yards out with a volleyed ball across the face of the box, but the pass was just behind the German striker.
Mönchengladbach have still failed to win a single match at home in the league this season, they’ve played ten, lost seven, and drawn three. Michael Frontzeck’s side are six points from safety, with sixteenth-placed St. Pauli playing Hoffenheim later on Sunday, so it is no wonder that the ‘Gladbach fans were demanding his exit in the closing stages of this game. Leverkusen’s win moves them up from fifth to second, now eleven points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.
