After three minutes of injury time Mark Clattenburg has blown the whistle. That's game over at Ewood Park, and it'd be hard to argue that Blackburn weren't full value for their three points after thoroughly dominating visiting West Bromwich Albion in the middle of the pitch. Gabriel Tamas put the hosts on the scoresheet after nodding into his own goal after 41 minutes before Canadian midfielder David Hoillet doubled Blackburn's lead with a 25-yard screamer shortly after the second half began.
Blackburn Rovers vs. West Bromwich Albion: Blackburn Win 2-0
West Bromwich Albion had few chances to make up the deficit, and most of those were from long range despite excellent work down the left side by winger Jerome Thomas, who was a thorn in Blackburn's side all evening, causing Michel Salgado severe problems whenever he had the ball. Although Thomas was the only West Brom player who provided the team with any sort of cutting edge, bizarre refereeing cost the team any chance they might have had at a comeback when they were denied a clear penalty following a Jermaine Jones challenge on Peter Odemwingie in the 68th minute.
Mark Clattenburg's decision will probably be a major talking point for Albion fans, and although he certainly didn't help the team the blown penalty will probably be overemphasised compared to the simple fact that their team didn't look like scoring against Blackburn's defence, while in the second half the home side were routinely able to pick their guests apart. On this evidence, Roberto di Matteo's side have some work to do. Blackburn bounce back from defeat at Chelsea to move to 7th in the table, at least temporarily, while West Brom find themselves level on points and goal-differential with 17th place Aston Villa.
