Espanyol have opened up a massive gap between them and their Europa League contending rivals while closing the gap between them and Champions League places, thanks to their emphatic 3-1 win over Getafe, who could be classified as one of those Europa League rivals. Espanyol didn’t take the lead until the 60th minute, but it certainly felt like they were on top of the match for much longer than that.
Getafe Vs. Espanyol: 1-3 Full Time, Brilliant Second Half From The Visitors
Despite an even half, leaning slightly towards Espanyol, Getafe walked into halftime with the lead thanks to an absolutely brilliant goal from Miku, who started in place of the injured Manu. He beat three men and the keeper before finishing with his left foot at the near post from 15 yards, giving his team the lead in the 14th minute.
Espanyol unleashed a barrage on the Getafe goal in the second half, though, scoring three equally brilliant goals in 11 minutes to stun Getafe and walk out of Madrid and the Coliseum Alfonso Perez with a win. Sergio Garcia, Luis Garcia, and Jose Maria Callejon all notched a goal and an assist each en route to Espanyol’s big win.
Currently, Espanyol sit seven points clear of Atletico Madrid, eight points clear of Sevilla, the highest placed team not currently in a European spot, two points behind Villarreal, who have yet to play this round, and three points behind Valencia, who sit in the last automatic qualifying spot for Champions League. Getafe have fallen to tenth place, now three points and a large goal differential out of Europe.
