Despite being left on the bench to start tonight’s match, Independiente’s Patricio Rodriguez has contributed in a big way with his team’s second goal. Independiente is now up 2-0 on Deportivo Quito and has put themselves in good position to advance to the group stages of Copa Libertadores.
Independiente Vs. Deportivo Quito: Hosts Double Lead Through Patricio Rodriguez
Rodriguez came into the game in the 20th minute as a replacement for the injured Maxi Velazquez. He had plenty of impact on the game in the first half, but his 70th minute goal is obviously his biggest contribution of the evening. In the lead up to the goal, Alex Bolaños Reascos of Deportivo Quito committed a foul about 30 yards from goal, leading to a free kick. Nicolas Cabrera swung in the delivery, and his ball took a deflection before falling to Rodriguez at the far post. The 20 year old attacking midfielder was waiting for it and tapped it into the back of the net, doubling his team’s lead.
A 1-0 win wouldn’t have been too comfortable for the hosts, but they will be confident if the game finishes as is and they have to go to Quito holding a 2-0 lead. However, both teams are looking aggressive and dangerous and it would not be surprising to see more goals scored.
