It wasn’t necessarily the big, flashy win that Independiente wanted, but a 2-0 home victory over Deportivo Quito in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores First Stage tie should work out just fine for them. New signing Matias Defederico and youngster Patricio Rodriguez were the scorers for the Red Devils, possibly signaling the ushering in of a new era after their last place finish in the 2010 Apertura in Argentina.
Independiente Vs. Deportivo Quito: Red Devils Take Lead To Ecuador
The visitors were strong in the center of midfield and put up a good fight throughout their match, but their shaky defending would ultimately be their downfall. Their central defenders made massive mistakes on both of Independiente’s goals, gifting them a home victory.
The first goal came as the result of a terrible touch by a Quito defender, with the ball falling to Federico immediately afterwards. The new arrival from Corinthians made the most of his opportunity and put in a tidy finish in the 49th minute. The second goal came on a set piece, with Rodriguez tapping in a goal after a flicked header. Both goals could have been easily prevented by decent defending.
Deportivo Quito now have a massive hill to climb, taking a two goal deficit back home. It’s always difficult for their opposition to play at elevation, over 9,000 feet above sea level, but it seems unlikely that they will be two or more goals better than their opponents.
