San Luis is tough, Estudiantes Tecos is bad, and $12m doesn’t buy you much at all. We learned all of this and more in one half of football in La Primera. There are three games taking place right now, with big teams and supposed title contenders Monterrey, Cruz Azul, and Tigres de la UANL taking on San Luis, Estudiantes Tecos, and Queretaro, respectably.
Mexican Primera Saturday, Clausura Round 1: Cruz Azul Leads, Tigres de la UANL Trails At Halftime
Monterrey and San Luis are knotted up at 0-0 in a tight affair at Estadio Tecnologico. Neither team has been able to create too many chances, but Monterrey have had the better moves going forward, while San Luis have been the more aggressive and willing to put in a tackle of the two teams. That’s not to say Monterrey isn’t tough, as they’ve picked up a couple of yellow cards of their own, and both teams have committed eight fouls so far.
The Blue Machine of Cruz Azul leads Estudiantes Tecos 3-1, and Tecos have only scored because the hosts gifted them a penalty when Julio Dominguez hauled down Eduardo Lillingston in the box. New signing Hugo Drouguett from Morelia assisted on the first two Cruz Azul goals, scored by Emmanuel Villa and Chaco Gimenez, while Javier Orozco assisted on Marcelo Palau’s third goal.
Finally, $12m has bought Tigres absolutely nothing so far, as they trail relegation battlers Queretaro 1-0. That 1-0 scoreline is exactly what happened in this tournament last fixture, but Tigres probably expected to hit the ground running with a better result. United States international Jonathan Bornstein has missed out on the game with an injury, and at this rate, he might get his chance to start right away when he comes back. The Tigres back four has been poor and Queretaro’s new signing Carlos Bueno looks like the real deal.
