Wayne Rooney's little incident in Montenegro during qualification for Euro 2012 has come back to haunt England in a big way. UEFA has reviewed the video of the Manchester United striker's sending off in Podgorica, which saw referee Wolfgang Stark with no choice but to dismiss the 25-year-old after he kicked out at Montenegro defender Miodrag Dzudovic following a routine tussle for the ball, and their findings... well, they aren't good news for the England team:

That’s a heavy price to pay for one moment of madness, although it’d be difficult to claim it wasn’t deserved. The England team is build around getting the most out of Rooney, and his missing the entirety of the group stages could well mean the side doesn’t progress or has to face a top seed in the first knockout rounds. The FA will presumably appeal the decision, but a three-match ban for violent conduct doesn’t seem at all out of the ordinary and you’d have to imagine that the sentence will be upheld.
With one swing of his foot, Rooney put a key qualifying game in jeopardy and then got himself banned for most of England's tournament games. What a stupid thing to do.
