Liverpool and Manchester United played 67 minutes of absolutely dire football, which was completely unsurprising based on the defensive lineup that Alex Ferguson selected, but the deadlock has finally been broken. Steven Gerrard has put the Reds up with a free-kick goal, and it's a goal that probably never should have been. Gerrard's strike was a very good one, but Andre Marriner and Ryan Giggs combined to give him a gift.
Liverpool Vs. Manchester United Live, 2011 Premier League: Steven Gerrard Goal Puts Reds Up
The goal came on a free kick, drawn by Charlie Adam. While Rio Ferdinand appeared to make slight contact with Adam, the Scottish international unquestionably gave some strong embellishment to the contact to win the free kick. Gerrard stepped up and fired it right through the wall, with Ryan Giggs stepping away from the wall and allowing Gerrard's shot to go straight through.
United have responded with two attacking subs, bringing on Nani and Wayne Rooney for Park Ji-Sung and Ashley Young.
