MLS Cuts SuperDraft By One Round, But Not Really

MLS essentially shortens the first day of their draft by one round and lengthens the second day by one round.

The 2012 MLS SuperDraft will be one round shorter than it was in 2011, and be held on Jan. 12 in Kansas City, Mo., the league announced on Friday. To make up for that lost round, the Supplemental draft will be extended by one round when it is held five days later.

The appreciable difference is negligible. Teams that traded for third-round SuperDraft picks will simply make their picks in the first round of the Supplemental Draft, for example.

This is the second straight year that MLS has cut a round from the SuperDraft and moved it to the Supplemental Draft. There was no Supplemental Draft following the 2009 and 2010 season, as the league had temporarily discontinued the reserve league.

This year’s SuperDraft will consist of 38 picks from the 19 teams. The Montreal Impact, the league’s newest team, will have the No. 1 pick in each round, including the Supplemental rounds.
