This has been a pretty disappointing season for the New York Red Bulls. A team that was expected to make a run at the Supporters' Shield ended up being the final team to qualify for the MLS Cup playoffs. Believe it or not, though, they are actually on better form than Wednesday's opponent, FC Dallas. Once a Metro explains:
MLS Cup Playoffs, 2011: Red Bulls Head Into Dallas In Better Form - Once A Metro
And it isn’t just the Red Bulls that Dallas has been having trouble with lately. The team is 4-7-1 in September and October. The Red Bulls are 3-1-1 in their last five.
Yes, that’s not exactly an apple-to-apples comparison. If you look at a similar timeframe for the Red Bulls, their record is 4-2-2, which is still better, but maybe doesn’t make the point quite as clearly. It’s also worth pointing out that FC Dallas’ record includes CONCACAF Champions League games, which the Red Bulls weren’t playing in, obviously.
Still, it’s not an irrelevant point that OAM makes. The Red Bulls have been playing better lately, and FC Dallas has been struggling. No way around that.
