Steven Gerrard Sidelined With Ankle Injury

Steven Gerrard, who has only just returned to action after a groin problem, has picked up an unrelated ankle injury which will keep him sidelined for even longer.

Steven Gerrard's injury comeback didn't last very long, did it? Liverpool's favourite midfielder had only just returned from a groin injury that had kept him out of action for six months before picking up an ankle injury in training, and said ankle injury has apparently become infected. Liverpool aren't sure how quickly they'll have their captain back - they'll need time to run further tests this week - but Gerrard's continued absence has to be a worry for Kenny Dalglish and company.

Dalglish didn't seem overly concerned by the injury, but he did confirm that it was initially regarded as minor and then 'flared up' before Liverpool's 2-0 win against West Bromwich Albion:

Steven has got an infection in his ankle. He was in our minds for the game and it just flared up. We will be more accurate next week. It’s nothing to do with any injuries before. It’s an infection. I suppose it’s like having an abscess in your mouth.

Gerrard, now 31, is at the sort of age where we should be expecting injuries to happen more frequently and to keep him out for longer. But this... well, it’s a little bit ridiculous at this point. Some have been talking about the recovery time frame in terms of months*, but until Wednesday we won’t really know - he’s almost certainly going to be missing this weekend’s trip to Swansea, though. Liverpool, of course, will be hoping to get their captain back in action as soon as possible. Good thing they bought all those midfielders this summer.

*Understandable when he’s currently walking around with crutches and a boot**.

**A big protective boot. Not a football boot. A football boot would be normal.
