Darlington Nagbe Wins 2011 MLS Goal Of The Year

Darlington Nagbe's rookie season did not go quite as planned. The No. 1 pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft got injured to start the year, didn't play in about a quarter of the Portland Timbers' games and scored just two goals. Of course, one of those goals will go down in history as the 2011 MLS Goal of the Year.

Nagbe's strike against Sporting Kansas City, in which he controlled a rebound, juggled it twice and perfectly slotted it inside the far corner beat out goals from Eric Hassli, Fredy Montero and Davide Chiumiento. Nagbe's goal garnered 42 percent of the fan vote.

It’s hard to argue with this being the fans’ selection. While any great goal has a degree of skill and luck combined, it seems that Nagbe’s was much more intentional than Hassli’s, the goal that received the second most votes. While Montero’s and Chiumiento’s goals were similarly skillful, neither was quite as awe-inducing as Nagbe’s.
