Manchester United Vs. Newcastle United, 2011 Premier League: Tim Krul, Linesman Deny Home Win

Newcastle United may have had their unbeaten start to the season ended by Manchester City, but the Magpies weren't about to let that get them down against old friends Manchester United. After a controversial match at Old Trafford, the visitors emerged with a 1-1 draw and a point, and United weren't very happy about it.

It's not difficult to understand why - the hosts were ahead and in control of the match when Rio Ferdinand dispossessed Hatem Ben Arfa with what seemed like an entirely fair sliding challenge, but referee Mike Jones, on the advice of the linesman, pointed to the spot and Demba Ba was able to convert, cancelling out Javier Hernandez's rather fortuitious opening goal.

There was more drama to come as Jonas Gutierrez found himself sent off for a rash challenge on Nani, and United would subject their guests to a late onslaught. Tim Krul was called into action on several occasions in the last few minutes and Danny Simpson was forced into a goalline clearance before the hosts regained the lead only to find the goal ruled out thanks to offside. There wasn't enough time to score for real, and at the final whistle several frustrated red shirts surrounded Jones demanding an explanation for the draw. Dropping two points means that Manchester City are now four clear at the top of the table, with the chance to make that seven when they play against Liverpool on Sunday.
