Columbus Crew, DC United Unveil 2012 Jerseys, Continue Collared Trend

United and Crew become the latest MLS team to unveil new jerseys with collars.

The latest trend in Major League Soccer jerseys appears to be collars, with the Columbus Crew and DC United both adding them to one of their 2012 jerseys. Both teams unveiled those jerseys on Monday. The Crew have added a collar to their primary yellow shirts, while United have added a collar to their secondary white shirts.

While the collars were really the only significant change for United, who retained the general feel of their existing shirts, the Crew made a change that was a little more substantial. Columbus has ditched the black kits with yellow pin-striping that they had used as their secondary kit in recent years and replaced that with one which will have a white stomach area and alternating black and yellow vertical stripes across the chest.

The United shirts follow the same color scheme as they have ever since the team was launched in 1996, but the changes will certainly be noticeable. United’s secondary white jersey will feature collars for the first time since 2002.

The Crew and United and the third and fourth teams to unveil some kind of new jersey for the 2012 season. The Philadelphia Union showcased their new jerseys last week, while the Seattle Sounders unveiled a new third kit as well.
