Barring some fantastic comebacks or unforeseen circumstances, the 2011 Copa Sudamericana Final should be contested between Universidad de Chile and LDU Quito. The Ecuadorian champions grabbed a 2-0 win in the first leg of their semifinal against Velez Sarsfield, while La U snatched a 1-1 away draw against a Vasco da Gama side that is unlikely to play their first choice players in the second leg.
Copa Sudamericana 2011, Semifinals: La U, LDU Quito Have Advantage Heading Into Second Legs
Four teams remain in the 2011 Copa Sudamericana. Going into the second legs of the semifinals, Universidad de Chile and LDU Quito are in good position to progress to the final.
Velez is a team lacking in firepower after summer sales and it seems unlikely that they will be able to turn around a 2-0 defeat. LDU Quito’s defensive record in their domestic league is absolutely superb, while Hernan Barcos has scored a total of 24 goals this season between the Eduadorian Serie A and Copa Sudamericana. That match kicks off at 7:15 pm ET on Tuesday night.
La U and Vasco play in the second semifinal on Wednesday night, kicking off at 6:50 pm ET. Vasco is two points off the top spot in the Brasileirao going into the final round of the competition, so they absolutely need three points on the weekend. This will likely cause them to play less than a first team. If they do so on the road against the form team in South America, the results will probably not be pretty for the Brazilians.
