The first five games of Week 11 of the German Bundesliga season have finished, and Borussia Dortmund have given Bayern Munich a little something to think about going into their game on Sunday. Der BVB kept the pressure on with a 5-1 thumping of Wolfsburg. Elsewhere, Marco Reus kept being Marco Reus with yet another brace, while Cologne and Bremen put on a show.
German Bundesliga Saturday, Week 11: Borussia Dortmund Stomp Wolfsburg; Marco Reus Downs Hertha
Borussia Dortmund 5-1 Wolfsburg
Ever since their title winning campaign of 2008-09, their defense has been absolutely shambolic under a variety of managers. Mario Götze made them look atrocious on Saturday, simultaneously making tabloid reports of his rumored €30 million transfer fee sound even more absurd. He scored twice in the rout, with Shinji Kagawa, Sven Bender and Robert Lewandowski adding the other goals.
Hertha BSC 1-2 Marco Re...Borussia Mönchengladbach
Marco Reus is the best player on a German team not playing in the UEFA Champions League. Hertha Berlin took an early lead, but his brace gave his team three points, taking him to seven league goals on the season. From the wing.
Nürnburg 1-2 Freiburg
The home side should have had a point, but completely threw this one away late. Mike Frantz put Nürnburg up 1-0 early in the 32nd minute, but Jan Rosenthal equalized quickly in the 34th minute. The Freiburg midfielder would confirm himself as the man of the match in stoppage time, as he drew a penalty on Nürnburg’s backup goalkeeper Alexander Stephan, which Papiss Demba Cisse converted.
Hoffenheim 1-1 Kaiserslautern
With both Jochim Löw and Jurgen Klinsmann in attendance, the potential German and American internationals playing in the match didn’t exactly impress their national managers. Vedad Ibesevic - a Bosnian international who could have played for the USA - scored the opener in the first half. Dorge Kouemaha found a deserved equalizer for Kaiserslautern, who probably should have won the game.
Werder Bremen 3-2 Köln
Oprah Winfrey was the referee in this one. YOU GET A CARD AND YOU GET A CARD AND YOU GET A CARD. Lukas Podolski continued his good form with a goal for Köln, but his defense didn't seem terribly interested in helping him out. Henrique Sereno Fonseca was sent off for Köln, while Claudio Pizarro scored a stunning hat trick to give the home side three points.
