Bayer Leverkusen Vs. Hamburg SV, 2011 Bundesliga: HSV Come Back From 2 Down To Draw

After 20 minutes, Hamburg SV was down 2-0 at the Bay Arena and looked well on their way to a defeat at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen. Then they got one goal, then another. By the end of the match, they looked the more likely of the two teams to find a winner, but instead neither team could get the last goal and the match finished 2-2.

Leverkusen were quick off the mark, scoring just five minutes in thanks to a deflection of an Andre Schurrle free kick. His kick from 25 yards sent the goalkeeper one direction before clipping the wall and putting the ball in the other side of the goal for the 1-0 Leverkusen lead.

It was Schurrle again in the 20th minute, this time chasing down a long ball before it got across the end line before crossing to Lars Bender at the back post. Bender was running in unmarked and knocked the ball home to double the lead for the home side.

Twice more it looked like Leverkusen would score to stretch their lead further, but those chances went begging and left the door open for Hamburg, who took advantage before halftime. Dennis Aogo chipped a free kick in to Heiko Westermann, who was unmarked and easily nodded home the goal that cut the Hamburg deficit in half.

After the break, Hamburg got the equalizer thanks to some fantastic play from Gokhan Tore and Marcell Jansen. It was Tore who started the play with a brilliant ball over the top of the Leverkusen defense and right into the path of Jansen, who made no mistake with his shot. He hit the ball hard and low to the far post with his first touch, leaving Bernd Leno without a chance.

Schurrle had a chance to level when he was played in on goal, but he put the ball wide of the post. Hamburg came the other way and threatened the Leverkusen goal several times late on, but they couldn’t hit the frame either so the two teams had no chice but to take the draw.
