Sounders Transfer Erik Friberg To Swedish Side Malmo

The Seattle Sounders continued what has been a rather significant slate of offseason moves on Monday, transferring midfielder Erik Friberg to Swedish side Malmo. The move came on the same day that the Sounders officially parted ways with Pat Noonan and Nate Jaqua and acquired Marc Burch, all of which happened during the Re-Entry Draft. The Sounders have not parted ways with nine players, while adding two during the 2011 offseason.

The move came as a bit of a shock even to those of us who cover the team closely, but in light of the news that Friberg is apparently getting ready to start a family, it did make sense. Friberg, who is Swedish, played one season with the Sounders. Although he only scored one goal and contributed two assists, he did appear in 26 matches and was thought to be one of the pieces the Sounders hoped to keep around for the foreseeable future.

For more insight and analysis of the move, be sure to check out Sounders blog Sounder at Heart.
