Atletico Madrid Fire Manager Gregorio Manzano

Atletico Madrid have fired manager Gregorio Manzano just six months into his second stint with the club.

Gregorio Manzano’s return to managing Atletico Madrid has come to a premature end. After an inconsistent season to date that’s seen the Atleti collect just 19 points from 16 games - they’re 10th in La Liga, although they have advanced to the knockout stages of the Europa League - it’s not exactly a surprise that there’d be some fallout, but it is a little bit of a shock that Manzano would only be given a handful of months with the club before he was shown the door.

Atletico’s board released a statement regarding Manzano’s sacking:

Broadly speaking, it says that the decision to sack Manzano was unanimous, a mutually agreeable termination has already been agreed on, and that the search for a new permanent manager has already begun. There’s no hint who they might be going for just yet, but a leader will certainly emerge before too long.
