From the not so good news department, investigators in Naples are taking a look at whether a recent rash of robbies of Napoli players could be linked to the local Camorra mafia. In recent weeks, Edison Cavani was burgled, Marek Hamsik's wife was carjacked and Ezequiel Lavezzi's partner was mugged at gunpoint. Now, investigators are taking a look at whether this is a method to get some of the club's profits.
Could Robberies Of Napoli Players Be Linked To The Mafia?
“The short space of time over which this has happened leaps out at you, which is why we are looking at these incidents with a certain interest,” Luigi Merolla, the senior Naples police officer, told Corriere della Sera.
Napoli has been a disappointment in the last couple decades, but now they’re in Serie A and into the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League. Revenues for the club are skyrocketing with the club’s success and apparently the mafia may want a cut.
The club increased the amount of tickets it sells online, meaning fewer and fewer tickets are being sold on the streets, which is where Camorra took a cut of all sales. The rumors around Naples are that the Camorra is organizing the burglary and mugging of players to get that cut of profits back and now the investigators are looking into. Isn’t sport so lovely, innocent and wholesome?
