Strained calves, pulled hamstrings, sprained ankles. Those are normal injuries for a footballer. A split scrotum? Well that’s a new one and it sounds infinitely more painful than any of the regular injuries. That’s why it’s tough not to feel bad for Gillingham winger Chris Whelpdale, who suffered that painful injury on Boxing Day in his club’s 2-1 win over Crawley.
Your Usual Football Injury: A Split Scrotum For Chris Whelpdale
“It’s a horrific injury,” Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent. “It’s absolutely disgusting. He’s going to be very sore, and I’m sure his wife won’t be too happy either.”
How kind of Hessenthaler to consider the wife while Whelpdale is dealing with extreme pain, but let’s be serious. It’s foolish to ever not consider the wife. Meanwhile, Whelpdale clearly had the worst Boxing Day around. Then again, earlier this year Tom Boonen split his scrotum wide open and finished a bike race so what does Whelpdale really have on him besides an acceptable reason to cry as much as he’d like?
